Welcome to Nainital the lake city of India



         Nainital is a glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, blessed with scenic natural spledour and varied natural resources. Dotted with lakes, Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India. The most prominent of the lakes is Naini lake ringed by hills . Nainital has a varied topography. Some of the important places in the district are Nainital, Haldwani, Kaladhungi, Ramnagar, Bhowali, Ramgarh, Mukteshwar, Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal. Nainital’s unending expense of scenic beauty is nothing short of a romance with awe-inspiring and pristine Mother nature. Nainital is headquarter of Nainital District. It is also divisional Headquarter of Kumaon Division of Uttarakhand State.

Nainital History

        Nainital finds mention in various ancient myths and legends. Naini Lake holds a lot of significance especially among the Hindus as it is believed to be one of the 64 Shakti Peeths, where some parts of the burned body of Sati (Parvati) fell here while being carried by Lord Shiva.Nainital was founded by a European businessman, P. Barron who was in awe with the beauty of the Naini Lake. In no time it developed as a summer retreat for the Englishmen and a second Municipal Board of the Northwestern Provinces.

Why is Nainital Famous Hill Station in India?

         Nainital is famous for the Naini Lake where it is believed that Lord Shiva performed his tandava with Parvati’s body. The Naini peak or the China peak is the highest in Nainital with a height of 2611mts. Some of the other places of tourist interest are the Mall, now known as the Govind Ballabh Pant Marg. You can find restaurants, offices and hotels all located in the Mall. Nainital Zoo is a very important tourist spot where you can find rare species of snow leopard, steppe eagle and the Himalayan black bear. The Governor House of the Raj Bhavan with its sprawling gardens is one of the few Raj Bhavnas open for public viewing. Nainital’s latest attraction is the Eco Cave Garden where your children can learn about ecosphere.

Adventure & Sports in Nainital

        To sailors all over the country, the Nainital Yatch Club has been an embodiment of tradition & repository of sailing heritage. The Lake the fountain-head of yatching, has promoted through the club, the keen interest India has in the sport. Every year national & zonal races are held in Naini Lake.
        
           Swimming competition are also organized in Nainital in summer months. Beside this Canoeing , Kyaking competition are organized in Naini Lake . Para sailing facility is available near Naukuchiatal .
          
          One can experience this sky adventure in the company of experienced para sailors . In adventure sports Hotbalooning is another attraction at Nainital. Hotbalooning camps are organized at Sukhatal .
         
          Golf Tournaments held every year in Golf Course of Raj Bhavan .Hockey, Football, Cricket, Boxing tournaments take place in Nainital annualy in their respective seasons at Flatt's. Nainital mountaineering club at Nainital is pioneer in the area of mountaineering & rock climbing training . Rock Climbing training takes place at BaraPathhar & Camels back .

How to reach Nainital
Delhi (Delhi) to Nainital (Uttaranchal) is 276 km.
Time by road is 4 hrs, 30 mins.   
       
          The nearest airport to Nainital is that of Pantnagar and has regular flights from the capital city of Delhi. From the airport taxis services to Nainital are available costing about Rs 1,500. The hill station also has no rail head and the nearest railway station is Kathgodam station which linked with Delhi. One can avail taxi from Kathgodam to Nainital which charges around Rs 600.

       Regular bus services from Delhi are also available. Deluxe and A/C Volvo buses regularly ply from Delhi and the price ranges from Rs 300 to Rs 800. One can also hire an A/C or non A/C taxi from Delhi which will cost anywhere between Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,100 (for a round trip).
